On Sunday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has fabricated a 'fake Yamuna' by filling an artificial pond with filtered water for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ceremonial dip during Chhath Puja.
Modi is scheduled to participate in the Chhath Puja festivities at Vasudev Ghat in northern Delhi on Tuesday.
Saurabh Bharadwaj, the AAP's Delhi chief, claimed that the pond was filled with treated water from the Wazirabad treatment plant, which is meant for drinking purposes in Delhi.
He criticized this move as an attempt to mislead the public and deceive devotees from Bihar and Purvanchal who travel for the festival.
Chhath Puja is a significant festival in Bihar, which is set to hold Assembly elections on November 6 and 11, with results to be announced on November 14.
Bharadwaj pointed out that while the Prime Minister would benefit from the 'fake Yamuna', devotees would have to perform their rituals in the actual polluted river. He remarked, 'Even if Purvanchalis die, the BJP’s propaganda must go on.'
He referenced a report from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, which warned that bathing in the Yamuna could lead to serious health issues. Bharadwaj accused the BJP of jeopardizing public health and faith for electoral gains in Bihar.

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal shared a video from Bharadwaj on social media, asserting that the BJP has disrespected the faith associated with Chhath Puja.
The BJP dismissed these claims as a manifestation of political frustration, according to reports from a media channel.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva accused the opposition of opposing the cleaning efforts at Vasudev Ghat.
He characterized the allegations as unprecedented, stating that it was the first time an opposition party protested against government initiatives aimed at cleanliness and sanitation.
Sachdeva also noted that the previous AAP government had prohibited Chhath Puja along the Yamuna banks from 2018 to 2024, and now they were creating a fuss after the BJP government opened natural ghats for devotees.
Chhath Puja is primarily celebrated by individuals from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, where devotees perform rituals in water bodies to honor the sun.
This year's celebrations commenced on Saturday and will conclude on Tuesday.
Protests Erupt Over Water Shortage at Trilokpuri Ghat
In a related development, residents of Trilokpuri in Delhi protested at a traffic signal on Sunday due to the lack of water at Vasundhara Ghat ahead of the Chhath Puja rituals, as reported by a media channel.
Devotees, who were allowed to perform rituals there after five years, demanded a water supply and accused the government of neglecting their needs.
One protester claimed, 'They have not even cleaned the ghat,' while another expressed disappointment, stating, 'They promised grand celebrations, but nothing has been done.'
